Why does my immersion heater keep tripping the electrics?

A tripping immersion almost always means the element has failed internally and is leaking current to earth. The safe fix is to replace the element — we don't recommend resetting and continuing to use it.

How long does it take to replace an immersion element?

Around 1–1.5 hours in most cases, including draining and refilling the cylinder. In hard-water areas a heavily scaled element can take a little longer to remove.

Do I need an electrician as well?

Usually not — replacing the element and thermostat is plumbing and heating work we complete in one visit. If the wiring or a separate immersion switch is faulty we'll let you know.

My hot water is heated by the boiler — why have an immersion?

Many cylinders have an immersion as a backup for when the boiler is down or for cheaper overnight Economy 7 heating. It's well worth keeping it working.
